PRE-MARITAL COUNSELLING

Just like people, relationships are always changing and evolving as a result of many variables – some within our control and others not. Having healthy discussions about some of those topics and preparing for them as much as possible will only strengthen your bond and give your marriage a great start. Long term planning may help you have a more stable relationship and avoid some of the common pitfalls that many couples ultimately face.  Also, learning tools to help you navigate through some of life’s milestones – both the positive and more challenging milestones – will be helpful when you reach them.

If you feel you require further or more in-depth counselling, you can also pursue that through  us.

Premarital counselling can help you to nurture healthy communication styles and assist you in avoiding negative patterns that can damage your marriage.

Are you engaged or thinking about getting engaged and want to give your marriage the best possible start? Many faith-based ceremonies require that an engaged couple attend premarital counselling or workshops prior to the marriage ceremony. Even if you are planning a civil ceremony, premarital counselling is a great idea. It’s a wonderful way to learn about and plan for changes that will inevitably take place in your marriage, which may include:

•           Moving in together (combining two households)

•           Decisions about starting a family

•           Blending families

•           Finances and values surrounding money

•           Communication styles and what to do when your styles are very different

•           Intimacy and sex

•           Navigating in-laws and extended family

•           Balancing work and life

•           Goal setting – retirement, travel, bucket lists, etc

COUPLE THERAPY

Couples therapy can be beneficial to help partners improve their communication and to resolve conflict. Many couples wait until the relationship is in trouble to start counselling but it can be helpful to open up critical conversations before things become dire. It can also be helpful to do pre-marital therapy and explore some of your individual beliefs about important topics.

Our clinicians have been trained to address various relationship issues, including:

•           Parenting

•           Finances

•           Sexual challenges

•           Emotional intimacy

Our clinicians offer integrative approaches that are empirically validated to help couples who are experiencing difficulties in their relationships.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY COUNSELLING

Marriage and family  Counseling helps couples handle the challenges of married life. The goal is to get the relationship back on track. It focuses on the ‘now’ and the issues faced by couples recurrently. Marriage counseling provides the opportunity for you to talk about your differences and compromises. More than anything else, what a counseling does is help the both of you address your problems for a stronger and happier relationship. It’s also about helping the couple master the art of communication.

Counseling can help mend the trust or re-kindle the flame. It’s about helping the couple cope up with the different kinds of stress experienced in the relationship. Marriage counseling is usually a short-term focused treatment whereas therapies are a therapeutic process that can last several sessions. We recognize the complex interconnectedness of a family and its members and how each member can affect each other’s thoughts, feelings and actions. A systems approach to treatment is generally used to facilitate changes within the family unit.

We offer services to identify and treat a variety of family problems, including:

  • Separation and Divorce Issues – excluding custody and access assessments and concerns
  • Concerns of Blended Families
  • Parenting Skills Training (for children experiencing emotional and behavioural issues)
  • Relationship Difficulties
  • Eating Disorders

The focus of family therapy is to improve family functioning as a system, to facilitate healthy communication and to develop skills to manage emotions in the family. We use evidence-based treatment to improve the overall functioning of the family unit.
